Level-Line

In 1996, Pelikan presented an absolute novelty with great technical innovations, the Level fountain pen. The ink capacity of the fountain was about three times of a conventional piston filler and five times of an ink cartridge. The tank was filled using a special ink bottle with a valve system.

The entire barrel of the Level serves as ink storage. Closest to the nib is the writing reservoir, which is separated by a valve from the rest of the storage tank. A separation of reserve tank and writing tank was required to ensure a safe venting of the tank via the ink feed system.
Turning the valve wheel on the end of the holder opens this lock and new ink can then run from the storage tank into the writing reservoir. Technically the mechanics of the two level models L65 and L5 is the same. But due to the somewhat larger overall length of L5 the rod between the valve knob and the valve is also a little longer.
Unfortunately the Level line did not achieve Pelikan´s expectations for it, and so production ceased in 2001.

Pelikan Level L65

The first Level pens introduced in 1996 were designed for teenagers. The pen was usually offered along with a 50 ml bottle of ink. After all, without the special bottle it was not possible to fill the fountain pen.
The dealers also had to learn how the new pen worked. A Pelikan promotional pack for dealers existed, containing - besides a pilot example of the level L65, the ink bottle and the instructions - a winning ticket for a journey to the Land of Pelicans. Where is this Land of Pelicans? The response was obtained when the dealer lit the table-fireworks included in the packet, which delivered a note with the solution. And in order to always keep a cool head (also good against trouble in the store), a battery-operated fan was included, and finally a leaflet describing useful tips for LEVEL experts.

Pelikan Level L5

A year after the introduction of the first Level models for the teenage market the first Level models for adults followed. They were more tasteful in design and several of them had gold nibs. All models were offered with a pen stand on which the Level could be stored in a safe and decorative way, which also contained an ink bottle holding 30 ml of ink for rapidly refuelling the fountain pen.
The first Level L5 models all had a transparent blue barrel. The cap, the filling knob and the grip section were black (L5 black) or silver(L5 silver). This was followed by models with ceramic coating. In 2001 the L5 were then made with a red or anthracite colored body too, but since production ended that same year these color variations are hard to find.

The remainders were sold a few years later, even in the catalogs of the following years, the pens were still advertised.
