Pelikan 100 Timeline - 1929 until 1944

Pelikan 100

1929 — 1944

The first Pelikan fountain pen!

  • Cylindrical cap top
  • No cap rings
  • Two opposing air vents
  • Heart-hole nib
  • Bakelite barrel

Loading

The Heart-hole disappears

November 1930

  • The heart-hole of the nib is replaced by a round breather hole, but the nib remains a third-party product until 1934.
  • The cap gets two rings and four air vents (two and two opposing).
  • Two additional air vents, thus providing a total of four air vents (two opposing) to equalize the pressure.

Substantial revision

June 1931

The cap top becomes conical. The grip section and barrel are now manufactured from two components. The grip section is made of hard rubber, the barrel from celluloid The bush which holds the nib and the feed together is cut from 17mm to 12mm.

Loading

Change of the section

June 1933 — 1937

The previously straight section becomes tapered. For pressure equalization the cap has two opposing air vents.

Loading

Nib size - the first version

August 30, 1935 — June 5, 1938

The cap top comes back out with two opposing air holes for pressure equalization returns.

Loading

Nib size - the second version

September 9, 1936 — June 8, 1941

For the German market, the nib size is now indicated near the turning knob.

Loading

Change of materials

1938 — 1940

Celluloid is now used instead of hard rubber, and the new logo decorates the cap top.

Loading

Palladium nib

May 16, 1938 — February 10, 1940

Because of legal prohibitions no gold nibs are made, instead palladium was used. These nibs are imprinted with PD. The model 100N is produced only for export, while the Model 100 is manufactured for German market.

Loading

Steel nib

November 11, 1939 — March 31, 1944

CN-Nibs (Chrome-Nickel) are used.

Loading

Barrel color and barrel material changed again

1940 — 1942

The injection moulding technique set up. The fluted turning knob becomes smooth. The barrel and the ink window are light green.

Loading

Materials shortage

June 26, 1942 — March 31, 1944

During World War II the cap bands were dispensed with on the Model 100. This saved valuable material. Either the caps have no rings (rarely), or it will be marked as a pattern instead of the metal rings in the plastic.

Loading

Seal improvements

October 29, 1942 — March 31, 1944

A synthetic seal replaced the cork. Pelikan used a material that was used for connecting sewer pipes at the time.

Loading

Discontinuation

March 31, 1944

The model 100 is discontinued in Germany. Spare parts are still made, but in price lists the model 100 is no longer mentioned.

Pelikan 100

In addition to the changes and variants that are shown in the timeline there are also pens which have a mix of parts. In addition there are a number of other variations including:

  • Clip ending in a diamond shape instead of drop shape (Collectors call it "Gdanzk production")
  • Only one cap ring instead of the usual two rings (Collectors call it "Gdanzk production")
  • Gold ring without clip (from 1930 a ladies' pen - for better storage in ladies handbags - a gold filled ring instead of a clip was produced)
  • Short cap-top (1935-1938, intended for wearing in a closed shirt pocket, the cap tube is longer than usual, so that the same total length of the cap is reached, while the length of the clip is unchanged.)
  • Chrome clips (especially in the war models we find silver colored clips)
  • 18 carat gold nib (needed for the French market, where only nibs made of 18 carat gold can be referred as gold nibs)

Details on the further development of the model can be found on the model 100 details page.

Pelikan 101

The original Pelikan fountain pen got its name Pelikan 100 in the years 1930/31. The models with black cap at this time were named Pelikan 100, fountain pens with white gold filled the name 110, with yellow gold filled overlay 111 and with a 14 carat yellow gold barrel and cap named Pelikan 112.

Models with colored caps were later given the name Pelikan101.

Pelikan 100 Overlay

The fountain pen model shown here is a regular Pelikan 100, which has been refined with a metal overlay. It is not about individual products, this model can be found back and forth in online marketplaces or forums.

These fountain pens are often referred to as Maenner-Pelikan, because they were long held for works by the jeweler Maenner from Stuttgart, but this corresponds to a persistent error. The mark clearly shows who carried out the refinement, it was the company Georg Lauer from Pforzheim.

Later the model 100N was also used as a basis.
